Austin Vickery - Saxophone
I am a professional saxophonist, arranger, composer and educator. I grew up in a small town (Vernal, Utah) and Austin began playing saxophone when he was 11 years old. He graduated from the University of Utah in 2000 with a Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance where he studied both classical and jazz with an emphasis on the later. While in Salt Lake City, he lead his own jazz quartet and performed with many local groups. In 2001, he left Utah to pursue more education in music. Austin attended the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music and graduated with a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies in 2004. While living in Cincinnati, Ihe had the opportunity to play with a number of local jazz, rock, R&B, swing, and funk bands as well as with professional artists and groups. Some of Austin's performance credits include: The O-Jays, The Temptations, The Four-Tops, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Lou Rawls and a record with local funk legend Bootsy Collins. Other notable Cincinnati groups I've performed with include: Ed Moss and the Society Jazz Orchestra, The John Lake Ensemble, The Dayton Jazz Orchestra, and The Blue Wisp Big Band to name a few. While working in Cincinnati as a musician, he was also the Director of Jazz at Earlham College in Richmond, IN. There Austin directed the Earlham Jazz Ensemble, taught private saxophone lessons, jazz theory, jazz improvisation and assisted with the Earlham Orchestra. In August 2008, I relocated to St. Petersburg, FL for a change of scenery and to refocus on more playing and writing. He is currently the Applied Instrumental Professor of Saxophone at Eckerd College  in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is also the lead tenor saxophonist in St. Pete's premiere big band, The Helios Jazz Orchestra. The youtube clip is of Helios playing a composition by the director, David Manson, called "Tangents." Austin is  versed in many styles of music and can play alto, tenor, soprano, and baritone saxophones as well as clarinet, bass clarinet and flute.
